Short Headed Seahorse. This young sea horse was only a little over 2 cm long sitting on top of the weed in the darkness all on its lonesome picking off microscopic organisms for dinner.

Gulf Pipefish playing peekaboo. Closely related to Seahorses these guys make their home in sea grasses and weeds where they will attach them selves using their tails just like a seahorse and feed on tiny mysid shrimp and zooplankton too small for the human eye to see.

Amazing colour and shape shifting of a cuttle fish. All smoot and slick with black bands moving down the body to make its self hard to see by predators with in the seagrass then quickly shape shifting to lumpy and the colour of the rocky seabed when exposed from the seagrass

On a night dive last week this little girl swam up to me rested down under my lights and buried her self there a little in the sea grass obviously thinking this would be a good spot to ambush a feed. I could tell it was a girl cause you could see the pregnant bulges. Little baby Wobbes soon!! 🦈🦈

Leafy Seadragon.
Yep another pic. I was diving with these amazing marine creatures yet again last Friday night after dark at Rapid Bay whilst pretty much just around the corner and frighteningly close to Rapid Bay we are in the middle of a microalgae bloom affecting areas from Waitpinga to Victor Harbour, kangaroo Island and now Edithburgh killing off big numbers of Leafy Sea-dragons, weedy Seadragons, seahorse, octopus and other cephlapods, large quantities of fish, cockles and other marine animals while all we can do is sit watch and pray it gets better and not worst 😕 here’s to hoping this is not the last pic I get to take of this particular Leafy

Decorator crabs layer their shells with plant matter from around the environment they are in so as to blend right in. This little guy at Port Hughes used the snow coral flowers to do just that and cracked me up with his little pointy wizard hat.

Stargazer!
Time for something ugly and cool, not a picture I would put on my wall and definitely not a photogenic species (like me) usually buried in the sand with eyes and mouth staring into the stars, I disturbed this guy while I was photographing sea dragons, a ball of dust exploded from the sand and once it dissipated I got to see my first Star Gazer!

The Southern Blue Ring Octopus scouting the seabed at night for a small meal. small, shy, nocturnal but they pack a punch that can be fatal to humans though it is very very rare for a bite on a human to occur. Definately an amazing animal to encounter and witness from a safe distance.

It’s not often you’ll see a Tasseled Angler Fish swimming by even if you lucky enough to see one at all. But this night one swam between me and the Cobbler Wobbegong I was photographing. Once I realised it wasn’t a just ball of week floating past my attention switched from wobbe to angler.

Southern Blue Ring hiding from the light between rocks, growing up to just 20cm these little octopus are very highly venomous but are not aggressive and opt first to scurry away and hide from anything not seen as food. Always a pleasure to be able to see one on a night dive.
